A recent Infographic done by Shane Snow for Mashable sparked our interest due to its comical yet clear representation of the reality of text messaging.

The cost advantages of text messaging versus a broadband plan have drawn the attention of the entire world, and the arrival of unlimited messaging plans a couple of years ago opened the doors for mass communication in the palm of your hand. No wonder text messaging has surpassed phone, email, and face-to-face conversations as the number one communication method for teenagers!

Do your customers send text messages? The answer is, probably yes. The following graphs listed below can better help you answer that question.

Clearly teenagers reign in the highest text messaging volume; although that doesn’t mean that the older generations are text illiterate. The 18+ population is sending at least 10 messages a day. Teenage girls send more than double the amount of messages than teenage guys. If your customer list includes teenagers as consumers or influencers, we feel it’s imperative that you reach out to them via text messaging. For confirmation, just ask their parents!

This Infograph successfully depicts the realities of who the U.S. texting population is- and surprise, 50 percent of U.S. text messagers are over 35 years old. Even though teenagers send the highest amount text messages, as a whole the older population sends and receives more messages because of the way the U.S. population is proportioned. Another interesting fact to note is that even though 25-35 year olds make up 16 percent of the U.S. population, they send 25 percent of the text messaging in the U.S. The take-away from this? You can reach more than just teens via text messaging.

Understanding how your customers communicate is important because it allows you to properly convey your marketing message. Using a 100 percent opt in service like Opt It Mobile 3.0 is a great way to ask your customers if they would like your specials delivered right to their hands. You will be surprised to learn just how many of them will gladly opt in.

Check out this brief timeline of text messaging from recent decades. Enjoy!
