In November 2009, the Mobile Marketing Association updated its definition of Mobile Marketing:

Mobile Marketing is a set of practices that enables organizations to communicate and engage with their audience in an interactive and relevant manner through any mobile device or network.

One aspect of mobile marketing is using text messaging as a communication platform for delivering marketing messages, alerts, reminders or other time sensitive information directly to the mobile phones of members who have opted-in to receive this information from you.

SMS or text messaging is the most ubiquitous form of mobile marketing with more than 285 million wireless subscribers, or 91% of the U.S. population using a wireless device. 96% percent of those mobile phones are capable of sending and receiving SMS. All of the major carriers in the U. S. are capable of sending and receiving SMS through their networks allowing you to run mobile marketing programs across the country or in your local area.
